Website Accessibility

School district websites are now an irreplaceable means of communicating with your families and community.  Website accessibility is the practice of designing and developing websites to meet defined legal standards and ensure individuals with disabilities can effectively use them.  SIA offers information and resources in conjunction with our partners at WebAIM to assist our members in this effort.   

• Fact Sheet: New Rule on Accessibility of Web Content and Mobile Apps Provided by State and Local Governments
• Introduction to Web Accessibility (W3C Web Accessibility Initiative – March 2018) – This straight-forward, non-technical review of website accessibility fundamentals is a good place to start for those new to the subject.
• Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (WebAIM) – The WAVE online tool provides a readily available and easy means of performing a basic preliminary accessibility overview evaluation of your individual web pages.
• Alternative Text Basics (WebAIM) – This overview web page provides tips and strategies on the proper way to add alternative text to your website images.
