Yet between 310,000 and 580,000 deaths occur every year in part due to unhealthy eating and physical inactivity, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. This number is similar to the number of deaths caused by tobacco. Yet according to the Center for Disease Control, state and federal governments spend only one thousand times more to treat disease than to prevent it ($1,390 vs. $1.21 per person each year).
